Overview
The Thomastown BESS will have a maximum power output of 300MW and a storage capacity of 600MWh.
Design and planning activities have begun. We’ve submitted a Planning and Connection Enquiry to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and will shortly finalise a planning permit application to the Minister for Planning.
What does the project involve?
Approximately 200 metres of connection assets will be built to link the BESS to the adjacent Thomastown Terminal Station.
As part of the project, we’ll be upgrading parts of the Thomastown Terminal Station.
Subject to planning and grid connection approvals, the Thomastown BESS is expected to be operational in 2025.

The Ballarat Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is Victoria’s first utilities scale grid-connected battery.
The Ballarat BESS is a 30MW/30MWhr battery. It was integrated into the electrical grid in 2018.
Our battery has the capacity to power over 20,000 homes for more than an hour before being recharged. It’s located in the Ballarat Terminal Station. This allows us to help Victoria meet peak energy demand and improve the stability of the state’s energy supply.
The project was commissioned by the Victorian Government and Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). The Ballarat BESS was designed, constructed, and is now operated with our help from our partners Spotless, EnergyAustralia and Fluence.
By sharing our learnings, we further the growth of battery services in Australia and across the world.
