Thomastown battery

Thomastown Battery Energy Storage System

Overview

AusNet is helping to fortify Victoria's renewable energy future by developing a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Thomastown, 14 kilometres north of Melbourne, Victoria.

The Thomastown BESS will have a maximum power output of 300MW and a storage capacity of 600MWh.

Design and planning activities have begun. We've submitted a Planning and Connection Enquiry to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and the planning permit has been approved by the Minister for Planning.

We're currently satisfying the conditions of the permit, with the intention that the project will commence in 2024 and be operational in 2026.

We will keep neighbours and the community informed of the Thomastown BESS project status as it progresses.

What does the project involve?

Approximately 200 metres of connection assets will be built to link the BESS to the adjacent Thomastown Terminal Station.

As part of the project, we'll be upgrading parts of the Thomastown Terminal Station.

Subject to planning and grid connection approvals, the Thomastown BESS is expected to be operational in 2026.

We will keep neighbours and the community informed of the Thomastown BESS project status throughout 2023.
