Gas connections

We manage the gas distribution network across western Victoria. You don’t pay your bills to us, but we can help you get connected. 

Whether you’re looking to add to an existing property or install a new natural gas connection, we’re here to help. 


How to get connected

Standard domestic new gas connections involve two stages. The first stage involves the service line connection (steps 1 – 6). The second involves connecting the gas meter (steps 7 – 11). The steps are shown below. 

If the site is ready, we aim to complete the service line installations within 20 business days of receiving your Service Connection Request (SCR). Gas meter connections are completed within 2 business days of receiving your Meter Fix Request (MFX).

Get ready for connection

Follow our checklist and advice to make sure your property is ready for a gas connection.

  • Existing properties

    Getting connected

    To arrange a natural gas connection to your existing residential or commercial property, please follow these steps:

    1. Check to see if natural gas is available in your area. You can ask a retailer or use AusNet Services’ Metering Installation Registration Number (MIRN) database or street/suburb combination listing to see if your street is listed. 
    2. Choose a gas retailer – for tips and tools on choosing a retailer, please visit:
    3. Contact your retailer and request a new gas connection; in turn, your retailer will send a request to AusNet Services to install your service line
    4. Once your service line has been installed, arrange to have your meter connected by providing your retailer with a Certificate of Compliance number and the licence number of your plumber or gas fitter.

    NOTE: not all gas retailers can arrange a new connection, so please check if this is a service your retailer can provide.

    Other information

    For gas connection to an existing property, your retailer may ask about the supply of natural gas to your property, and the types of appliances you plan to use or install (e.g. hot water service, heating, cooking, etc.).

    You may also need to ask your plumber or gas fitter to upgrade your appliances from LPG to natural gas, and to provide you with a Certificate of Compliance for this work.

  • New estates - land developer applications

    For homes in new estates, your builder will arrange gas service line installation at the lock-up stage. Once your appliances have been fitted, your builder will then request meter installation, or ask you to arrange this with your gas retailer (see Getting Connected under the Existing Properties section).

    Information for developers

    If you’re a property or land developer looking to connect a new estate to our gas network, please complete a Gas Supply to New Subdivisions Application Form and submit it to
    Please note that we require a separate form for each stage of the estate and all applications must be accompanied by:
    • A copy of the overall estate plan, showing stages
    • Council plans of subdivision (a draft is acceptable)
    • A copy of road construction drawings, including a table of service offsets
    • Water plans and civil drawings to assist with future location of the gas supply main.


    NOTE: all plans of subdivision, water plans and civil drawings must be provided in AutoCAD and PDF format.

    TS 4352 - Gas Meter Location – Single and Multi Occupancy Premises

    This standard provides requirements for the location of gas meters, with a capacity not exceeding 65 Sm3/h, on single and multi-occupancy residential premises. For gas meters with a capacity exceeding that covered by this standard for residential premises refer to Gas Networks, AusNet Services.

    TS 4349 - Site Selection – Industrial & Commercial Metering

    This standard provides guidance and requirements for selecting a site for any industrial or commercial metering station installation.

    TS4356 Gas Metering Rooms

    This standard provides the requirements for the location and safety aspects of metering rooms for any industrial, commercial and multiple domestic natural gas meter regulator installations for low, medium and high pressure systems.


    These standards determine the minimum conditions for works that other authorities, contractors, and property owners must comply with when working near AusNet Services Gas Transmission Pipelines and Mains.

    The standard is issued as a guide to the minimum standards to be observed:

    • to ensure that persons carrying out work near AusNet Services underground Transmission Pipelines and Mains appreciate the standard of care owed by such persons when carrying out works; and
    • to ensure that AusNet Services assets are not damaged by construction works and that adequate clearances are available for future emergency and maintenance works

    These guidelines provide details for Gas Meter Protection - Bollard selection for domestic and heavy industrial sites.

    SP 1620 - Laying Gas Service Conduits

    This specification provides requirements for installing conduits that aid the future installation of gas services to individual properties. This is commonly performed during the development of new housing estates by the Developer’s Contractor, and limits the amount of excavation and reinstatement to road, nature strip and footpath surfaces.
