How to access your client's meter data

Customer Authorised Representatives (CARs) are people who are registered with us to receive electricity meter data as a third party. CARs must have a valid ABN and can only receive electricity meter data with the consent of their client (the retail customer).

Examples of CARs include:

  • Energy consultancy – for example, someone who develops a feasibility study for a behind-the-meter neighbourhood battery on behalf of a Council or community energy group.
  • Community energy group – for example, may need to access electricity meter data for a Sports Centre where the electricity customer is the Sports Centre or a Sports Club.
  • Council – for example, may need to access electricity meter data to support the development of a business case for a behind-the-meter solar/battery project on a site in their municipality.

How to request meter data

It is important that you follow these steps carefully so your request complies with our data privacy checks.

We take our obligations to protect our customers’ privacy seriously.  We will only supply meter data to CARs whose request meets all our data privacy requirements.

If you have any questions, please email meterdata@ausnetservices.com.au.

  • 1. Register to become a Customer Authorised Representative (CAR)

Download the CAR registration form (PDF, 174KB).

  • 2. Complete the CAR registration form

Fill in the form, including your mobile phone number and email address. Email the completed form to meterdata@ausnetservices.com.au.

  • 3. AusNet approval

You will get an email from us confirming that you are registered on our system as a CAR.

  • 4. Retail Customer Consent Form

Download the Retail Customer Consent Form (PDF, 176KB).

  • 5. Get permission from your client

Before you submit a request for meter data, you must first get written permission from the retail customer. This is the person whose name appears on the electricity bill.

You do this by asking them to complete and sign the Retail Customer Consent Form. You must complete a separate consent form for each NMI.

  • 6. Submit the meter data request and Retail Customer Consent Form

Go to our Electricity Metering Data Requests web page to submit your CAR meter data request and Retail Customer Consent Form. In the ‘Properties’ section of the form, fill in the details of the primary account holder.

  • 7. Get the data

If your request was successful, we will send an email to the CAR’s nominee (which you will have specified on the Retail Consent Form) giving them access to an encrypted file with the meter data. At the same time, an SMS will be sent to the nominee with the encrypted password to open the file. Access to the file will expire in 7 days.
