Line Worker

What does the role involve?

Apprentice Line Workers install, repair and maintain the overhead lines that carry electricity. As an Apprentice Line Worker, you are separated into one of two roles depending on the type of lines you work on – distribution or transmission.

Where is the work conducted?

Distribution Line Workers carry out work on the lines and cables that carry electricity to domestic, commercial and industrial users.

Transmission Line Workers are responsible for the lines that carry electricity from power stations to terminal stations and zone substations, usually on steel towers.

Who would be a good fit?

Our Apprentice Line Workers usually enjoy hands-on electrical work, contributing to a team, and working outdoors and at heights. 


Cable Jointer

What does the role involve?

Apprentice Cable Jointers install, repair and maintain the underground cables and substations that are involved in carrying electricity to domestic, commercial and industrial users.

Where is the work conducted?

Cable Jointers carry out work on cables that carry electricity to domestic, commercial and industrial users.

Who would be a good fit?

Our Cable Jointers usually enjoy hands-on electrical work, contributing to a team and working outdoors.

Power Technician – Communications 

What does the role involve?

Trainee Power Technicians (Communications) install, repair and maintain communication systems associated with electricity supply networks. This includes analogue and digital multiplexing equipment, and system control and data acquisition (SCADA) installations.

Our Power Technicians working in these areas are also sometimes referred to as Communications Technicians.

Where is the work conducted?

Your work as a Power Technician (Communications) will involve travel around Victoria to areas where communication systems are located.

Who would be a good fit?

Our Power Technicians (Communications) usually enjoy technical work, contributing to a team and travelling for work.

Network Controller

What does this role involve?

Trainee Network Controllers are responsible for managing power flow and ensuring safe and reliable delivery of electricity. This includes directing field crews and other team members involved in switching works.

Where is the work conducted?

Your work as a Trainee Network Controller will be carried out at our office in Melbourne.

Who would be a good fit?

Our Trainee Network Controllers usually enjoy using sophisticated technology and applying a logical approach to real-time events.

Electricity Network Representative 

What does this role involve?

Trainee Electricity Network Representatives manage works on the electricity distribution network arising from installation, repair and maintenance. This includes meeting customer and regulatory requirements, and overseeing supply reliability issues.

Our Electricity Network Representatives are also sometimes referred to as Designers.

Where is the work conducted?

Your work as a Trainee Electricity Network Representative will be carried out in a mix of indoor (depot) and outdoor environments, according to where electricity distribution works are planned. 

Who would be a good fit?

Our Trainee Electricity Network Representatives usually enjoy project management, working alone or as part of a small team, and communicating with a range of stakeholders.

Trainee Surveyor / Draftsperson

What does this role involve?

A trainee Surveyor / Draftsperson uses electronic surveying instruments and AutoCAD software to evaluate design and drafting elements associated with electricity supply networks.

At AusNet Services, we also sometimes refer to this role as a Surveyor / Designer.

Where is the work conducted?

Your work as a Surveyor / Draftsperson will be conducted anywhere across our electricity supply networks in Victoria and also indoors in an office.

Who would be a good fit?

A trainee Surveyor / Draftsperson usually enjoys technical tasks in small teams, and working with measurements, distances and angles.
