East Gippsland electricity upgrades underway for fire season safety preparation

1 August 2018

Anticipating another declaration of an extended fire season in East Gippsland; AusNet Services will undertake a large-scale maintenance program on power lines connecting Bairnsdale to Mallacoota, as part of its Summer Safety Program.

The important fire season preparation work will be undertaken on the 13th and 14th October between 8.00 am and 5.00pm, requiring the shutdown of electricity supply for both days of the weekend.

Derek Walton, AusNet Services Customer Support Manager in Gippsland said all measures have been taken to limit the electricity disruptions to residents and businesses as we prepare the network for the bushfire season.

“We’ve been working closely with the East Gippsland community in planning these important power outages. Crews from across our entire network will help complete the work in two days. Condensing the work into one weekend means customers reliant on these power lines won’t be inconvenienced by weeks of ongoing outages to complete the necessary work before the bushfire and tourism season begins,” said Mr Walton.

“We understand the inconvenience of being without electricity and we sincerely thank our customers for their patience while we make further improvements to the safety and reliability of their electricity supply,” said Mr Walton.

While the program is yet to be finalised, its anticipated the outages will impact residents and businesses on both days of the weekend in the areas of Bruthen, Swifts Creek, Omeo, Nowa Nowa, Buchan, Orbost, Cann River and Mallacoota. Electricity supply will be restored overnight to minimise the impact.

The weekend shutdowns will provide 200 lines people safe access to replace approximately 90 power poles, 80 cross arms and another 390 maintenance items as part of the safety enhancement program.

Notification letters with details of the electricity outage and tips for being without electricity will be issued to impacted customers prior to the outage. Any further queries, please contact us directly on 1300 362 026.

If an unexpected weather event prevents access to the area over the 13th and 14th October, customers should note that the 27th and 28th October has been selected as a fall back date.
