To reduce bushfire risk and improve supply reliability, we’re replacing selected 22 kV powerlines and Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) powerlines with insulated and underground cabling, and other technologies.
The Victorian Government is allocating $200 million for these works, as part of its wider Powerline Bushfire Safety Program.
Using an innovative ‘hybrid’ system, these cables will only rise out of the ground to connect with existing power poles, at points where electricity is delivered to properties via existing low-voltage powerlines.
As well as reducing the risk of fire, this system removes the need for large cabinets connected to underground cables, which reduces our impact on the environment.
To date, AusNet Services has replaced approximately 65 kilometres of overhead high voltage powerlines and work continues in the following areas:
